Tibetan bowl (Singing bowl)

Cup used in meditation practice and various healing therapies.

According to the Tibetan oral tradition, the existence of these (singing) bowls dates from the time of the Buddha (560 - 480 BC). The tradition was brought from India to Tibet, along with the teachings of the Buddha, by the great Tantric Master Padmasambhava in the 8th century AD.

The cups produce sounds that lead to a deep state of relaxation which naturally helps to enter into meditation, the ultimate goal being enlightenment. They are an essential aid to meditation, and can be found in particular Buddhist altars, and in temples, monasteries and meditation halls around the world.

We have 3 sizes: small, medium and large.

The "around the edge" technique...

Hold the corner bowl in the palm of your left hand. For smaller bowls hold your fingertips.

Grasp the stick midway through the length, with all your fingertips pointing down and touching the wood. Palm down.

Gently strike the stick against the side of the bowl to "warm up" the bell.

With uniform pressure, rub the rod clockwise around the outer edge of the bowl. Use a full arm movement, as well as moving a large soup pot, and keep the stick straight up and down! It's not a wrist movement, but a full arm movement.

Remember to apply pressure - the friction of the stick against the outside of the bowl produces vibrations that result in sound.

Try your own speed. Usually people do it very quickly! Let the sound accumulate slowly and the vibration makes you "sing" the bowl.
